Open Question: Why do most poets think uber-complexity makes their poetry better?!?

After commenting on a set of poems earlier I thought about this and thought it was something worth addressing. [ Yes I am copy/pasting part of my answers lol ] A lot of poets out there IMO need to ease up on the enigmatic style and overuse of complex words. Most readers don't want to read poetry which requires them to open a dictionary several times or to read poetry which is so enigmatic, the reader must "Decode" it's meaning through deep analysis. Face it, if people have a difficult time understanding your poetry, not many people are going to like it. Not everyone has a high IQ and can understand the term "My Estranged Deviant Companions". Where other simpler variations of that line would be more acceptable to the average IQ. I once saw quote on Allpoetry.com that said something along these lines "It is unnecessary to use a complex word where a simpler one would suffice". Not only does overly complex words turn people away but being enigmatic and overly metaphoric too. For instance the line. "Orbs of lightning with dashes of beautiful obsidian. Like blades of grass on the horizon of twin suns. They flicker in the awe of them. " Those metaphors are speaking of beautiful eyes with a gorgeous set of black eyelashes. Did you figure that out? No, I bet you were tricked into picturing a black sunset with wavy blades of grass mirrored by a lake. Or perhaps even several other possibilities. Because obsidian is a black glassy rock, most people don't know what obsidian is, so why use it? Why not just say black or dark? This is what being overly-metaphoric leads to. Almost every non-poetic readers don't care for that nice of poetry whether you like to admit it or not. That is what I like to call "Jigsaw poetry" and I personally don't care for it myself. There is nothing wrong with saying. "A set of beautiful flowing eyes Black lashes like blades of grass Flickering in awe of them" It makes your poetry no less powerful than if you used the complex variant stated earlier. So why do this? Does it effect your expression THAT much to use words the average person doesn't know? To confuse people? I understand that Poetry is expression in words and nothing more. But once you go public with your poem hoping to receive good reviews your subject to whether or not it is enjoyable to the average person. In other words, if the poem is meant to only make sense to you or a tiny audience, it's pointless to ask the opinions of the public.

Open Question: Mucharda, maybe you will find this interesting.?

Yoúr answer to my question interested me, and I would like to clear the things out. You wrote: “you're right, Palestinians genetically aren't Arab”. Of course the true Palestinians genetically are not Arabs! They are Jews. In case you do not know this; Jews lived in Palestine, created the Torah and formed there two pretty mighty kingdoms in the time when Arabs were still driving camels in Arabia and were just a bunch of illiterate savages. “I guess we'll just ignore every those pesky population surveys”. This is what I like in Arabs! As soon as the survey contains something that does not support their point of view, they say something like “I guess we'll just ignore every those pesky population surveys” “ Oh and Adriaan Reland never left the Netherlands”. Really? He lived in the 17th century – and you talk about this as a witness. I did not know you were that old to be his companion in his trips “And Nablus had a Muslim population of about 20,000 in the middle 19th century, ONE city (B. B. Doumani, The political economy of population counts in Ottoman Palestine: Nablus, Circa 1950, International Journal of Middle East Studies, Vol 26 (1994) 1-17).” MUSLIM- right. ARAB- no. It´s the trick you Arabs always use when talking to the naïve Europeans or Americans: “Muslim” is automatically associated in their heads with “Arab”. But it´s not so. Arabs lost Palestine to the Turks – who were ALSO Muslims. So, the population of Nablus was predominantly MUSLIM- but it was not ARAB. “ odd that you say Ibn Khaldun as a credible historian…” - Ibn Khaldun was not “ a credible historian”??? The author of the Muqaddimah which is studied in the Western Universities until now is not “ a credible historian”? You have the nerve. So, Ibn ishaq, together with Ibn Hisham, are not “credible historians”, because “Sirat RasulAllah” contains facts of Muhammad´s life you arabs would prefer to keep very well hidden, like the extermination of Banu Quraiza. Tabari is not “ a credible historian” because he wrote the truth about how Muhammad ordered to kill Ka’b bin Al Ashraf only because he wrote better poetry than Muhammad. Waqidi is not “ a credible historian” because he in his "Kitab al-Tarikh wa al-Maghazi" wrote about the oceans of blood shed by Muslims during their “peaceful spreading of islam”... The only “credible historian” is, of course, muhammad himself, with his sensational discovery that Alexander The Great was Muslim, and the only “credible “ historical book is the Quran… Give me a break. “he claimed Jews altered the Torah from the true word of God; and acquired Canaan through genocide”. It only proves that he was a very credible historian; the asseverations that the “Jews altered the Torah” are being made by Muslims from the time of Muhammad –and until today. And about the “genocide” through which Jews acquired Canaan: I do not know if it was “ a genocide”, but that the Ancient Hebrews had killed quite a lot of the Canaanites, including the civilians – it´s a fact nobody can deny. “In 1920, the League of Nations' Interim Report on the Civil Administration of Palestine stated that there were 700,000 people living in Palestine, four-fifiths being Arab”. Lie. This is the quote of the League of Nations' Interim Report on the Civil Administration of Palestine of 1920 (http://domino.un.org/UNISPAL.NSF/9a798adbf322aff38525617b006d88d7/349b02280a930813052565e90048ed1c?OpenDocument ) : “There are now in the whole of Palestine hardly 700,000 people, a population much less than that of the province of Gallilee alone in the time of Christ… Four-fifths of the whole population are Moslems. A tiny proportion of these are Bedouin Arabs; the remainder, although they talk Arabic and are termed Arabs, are largely OF MIXED RACE”. So, 4/5 of the population were Muslims- but NOT Arabs. The fact that you talk English does not make you British, you know. “Muqaddasi didn't say that Jerusalem was devoid of Muslims”, If you can find any other interpretation to the phrase “the mosque is empty of worshipers... The Jews constitute the majority of Jerusalem's population”, then you must be a highly creative person. “By the way he says the mosque in Jerusalem was one of the largest in the world "the mosque is among the largest, and nowhere are holy places more numerous". Absolutely right. Jerusalem had only one mosque, but it was among the largest in the world. And of course, nowhere in the world you can find a place with more holy places than in Jerusalem. The problem is that these Holy places are only Jewish or Christian – not Islamic. And in general in Jerualem of Muqaddasi, “Everywhere the Christians and Jews have the upper hand, and the mosque is void of either congregation or assembly of learned men. (Muqaddasi 1896: 37). http://www.bu.edu/mzank/Jerusalem/tx/muqqadasi.htm “I think we're done here” On this, you are absolutely right.

Resolved Question: Critique a love poem? 10 Points to most constructive answer.?

[ The one who said no. ] http://allpoetry.com/poem/6153132 - - - Treading, beating, hanging with each step of a broken heart bound by the scars of the trees abound. One more step and a tear will fall to the ground. One more screwed up face contorted where those tears are found. I turn around in a circle and look up to the sky around Goosebumps, standing hair, and broken thoughts keep me on edge in this place. If only the one, if only a few, if only everyone could have seen my face. My face as I walked alone in this jungle. Lost without a trace. If only the one put her hand upon my chin and wiped my tears away with her grace. Tonight I decide, I think, I believe, I hate, I adore, I cannot let it go I would have cleared the clouds over if I could have you know If only one more step would heal me, I would take that seed and sow. But one more step gets me farther away from the one, the one, the one who said no. - - - I know the title is sort of bland as is the ending line. But It has a special meaning and I am not sure what else to go with. I have more poems on Allpoetry.com http://allpoetry.com/poem/6153132 Check them out if your interested in my poetry. Btw... this isn't a rejection poem as the title and ending would guide you to believe. It is really about her saying "No more" rather than a rejecting No. It is what I wrote to describe the feelings I felt when I went to blow some steam off. It also describes emotions I felt when I worked at a mall at night, walking alone in the empty mall with music in the background. "and this part, we know your speaking of a girl, so if you changed this line" The problem is, I wanted to make her sort of enigmatic and go with the theme of the poem "The one". If I remove "The one" from that line the poem loses some theme value.

Open Question: Victor Hugo's Man and Woman?

Can Anybody explain these lines? Well, I can understand them but I need expert's opinion on these lines. Thanks a bunch! Man is the most elevated of creatures, lady the most sublime of ideals. God made for man a throne; for lady an altar. The throne exalts, the altar sanctifies. Man is the brain, lady, the heart. The brain creates light, the heart, adore. Light engenders, adore resurrects. Because of reason Man is strong. Because of tears lady is invincible. Reason is convincing, tears, moving. Man is capable of every heroism, lady of every martyrdom. Heroism ennobles, martyrdom sublimates. Man has supremacy, lady, preference. Supremacy is strength, preference is the right. Man is a genius, lady, an angel. Genius is immeasurable, the angel indefinable. The aspiration of man is supreme glory, The aspiration of lady is extreme virtue. Glory creates every that is great; virtue, every that is divine. Man is a code, lady a gospel. A code corrects; the gospel perfects. Man thinks, lady dreams. To think is to have a worm in the brain, to dream is to have a halo on the brow. Man is an ocean, lady a lake. The ocean has the adorning pearl, the lake, dazzling poetry. Man is the flying eagle, lady, the singing nightingale. To fly is to conquer space. To sing is to conquer the soul. Man is a temple, lady a shrine. Before the temple we discover ourselves, before the shrine we kneel. In short, man is found where earth finishes, lady where heaven begins.

Open Question: Chances of getting into UT Austin or A&M or Cornell?

Junior in TX I'm not in the top ten, but I'm the top quarter (22%): I got a 3.8 GPA (out of 4) SAT: I got a pretty bad grade on my first attempt (1800), but I'm retaking it and hoping to receive a 2020+ (I took a practice one few days ago and I got a 2080) Extracurriculars: - Varsity Ice Hockey every 4 years (assistant captain this year, maybe captain next year) - National Honors Society (Volunteering and Leadership) - Interact Club (Volunteering) (4 years) - Clements Earth (Promoting Recycling / Recycling in school) (2 years) - French Club (3 years) I'm Treasurer this year, President next year. - YES program (Volunteer Program) - I've completed 100+ community service hours - This summer, I'll be volunteering at a hospital for 3 months. (I want to major in pre-Med) Curriculum: At my competitive high school, there are only advanced and honors/AP courses. Advanced are "easier". I took 1 honors freshmen year, 2 sophomore, 3 junior, and I'll be taking 4.5 senior year. AP Exams: This year I'll be taking US History AP, and French AP. Next year, I'll be taking Bio, Gov't, Human Geo and Calc AB. Other: I'm a minority, I have lived in 5 different countries throughout my life (I'll definitely stress that in my essay and talk about being open-minded and cultural), and I won the State Prize for French Poetry during my sophomore year. (If that counts in any way) What are my chances? Thanks for your input. What else should I do? (I'm taking SAT II senior year: Bio and Math)

Open Question: Help with my life! I feel like i have nothing to live for...?

I'm in 8th grade by the way. So, basically both of my parents are mad @ me, my dad's mad because i had a boy over to my moms home (their divorced) without telling him, and my mom is mad at me because apparently i'm demanding. My friends are acting weird, it's like the group of friends i've been so close to for the past 4 years is breaking apart. I didn't win the scholastic competition (I submitted poetry) which proves I'm no good at writing. I'm not very pretty, and I'm nice of chubby (5'5", 117 pounds). I feel like I'm avoiding my boyfriend, and that I don't really like him that much. I'm sort of obsessed with trying to "develop" anorexia, so I can die and it will be less difficult on my family. Everything just seems so pointless...like I'm not really gifted at anything and I don't contribute anything to the world.

Open Question: What doo you think of my poems?

I've been writing poetry for awhile now, and I was wondering if i'm really any good at it. So here aree two poems, take a look.. and tell me what you think and pick a favouritee?? POEM #1. How could you reassure me that everything was fine when with each and every passing day your were stepping further over the line Telling me you adore me only to tell me that you don't Telling me that things will be fine when I know they won't I can't believe you would tell me that you adore me so much and go on and on and on about the future and such to tell me that I'm nothing completely unknown to you I thought you were a better person and that is something you wouldn't do I don't know what's going on i've stepped out from the person inside when I start to feel every those emotions it makes me want to hide normally I'd run to you but that I can no longer do i'm trying my hardest to grin and tug myself through but I wake up in the morning thinking about you. POEM #2. Tears well in my eyes this comes as no surprise yet I didn't think you were capable of keeping such lies My thoughts are scattered my heart starts to shatter I'm beggining to feel like to you I no longer matter Your answers are luring but not reassuring her comments are questionable and caused the pain i'm enduring It's difficult to believe you when everything you say is crafted to perfection lined to make me feel a certain way You know i'm gulable and you know i'm weak and you know that when you make a promise I'm unable to talk I want to be sure and I want to believe but trust is something with you I have yet to acheive You tell me don't worry and I answer simply okay and push back that emotion of feeling betray Beyond my understanding I don't know what you do But being truthful to me is completely up to you.

Open Question: Why is Buk not getting the ban hammer for spamming meaningless tripe?!?

I mean seriously, this guy obviously has no intention on using the Poetry section for constructive purposes. This guy is posting things that 1. Aren't questions 2. Have nothing to do with poetry 3. Fill up space where useful and important questions should be. Just because you and a lot of other Poem category goers are fans of him and or like to kiss his rear orifice doesn't mean he isn't violating the rules and wasting our time. This has nothing to do with censorship. If he posted Poetry, I would positively comment on it, but what he has posted so far is tripe. "It's a web site for fun." No, that is what you use it for. This websites purpose was meant to help people. Not to entertain cyber junkies with nothing better to do than post random crap on Y!A. @Shirley "Someone asks a question" EXACTLY!... Is he asking questions? NO! I relax my case. Kiss his @ss more.

Open Question: Poetry Question... name that poem?

I only know a few parts of the poem, and the plot. Plot: A mom has her son kill his dad. The son ends up poisoned, (by the mom, I think?) found out as he fed his food to his hunting dogs, who died automatically. His mom continues asking him questions, and he continues to answer that she's to leave him be because he feels sick and needs to lie down. "...and need to lie down." "where have you been... ... my charming young man?"

Open Question: The meaning to this song: "How do you love" by collective soul?

I've always adored this tune, I read somewhere that he wrote it for his ex wife, but that was an unreliable source, and I'm not sure if its true. Anyways, what does he mean when he says "calendar of days just for you" and also.. "when your angels cant sing.." (pretty sure its sing, not look, right?). also what does this part mean: "this space where you've been living, has gifts you've never given, thats the face you always show. Ask me for words of wisdom, tell me of your condition. I dont know.." its every poetry.. and I'm terrible at breaking apart poetry :)
